Waterbouwdag 2026: Hydraulic engineering in a global perspective

Historically, Dutch hydraulic engineering has enjoyed enormous prestige worldwide. The famous phrase "Bring in the Dutch!" testifies to the unique expertise that Dutch companies and knowledge institutions could offer during floods and other complex hydraulic engineering challenges. But the world is developing at a rapid pace, and Dutch hydraulic engineering is no longer universally represented in major international projects for flood protection, area development, and land reclamation.

This raises questions. How is internationalization within our sector progressing? To what extent does maintaining our unique facilities and expertise depend on work abroad, and what can we learn from developments and projects beyond our borders? What unique role can Dutch hydraulic engineering continue to play in making the world safer, more livable, and more sustainable? 

 ​During the Waterbouwdag 2026, we look beyond the Dutch borders with the theme 'Hydraulic engineering in a global perspective.'Why is this important, what does it bring us, and what can we offer? 

We invite everyone — from the Netherlands and abroad — to think along with us, share experiences, and join the conversation on this fascinating topic.​

​The Waterbouwdag take place on Thursday 29 of October 2026 in the Beatrixgebouw in Utrecht.
Registration starts mid June.
